Aycha Marks played local songs in carimbó, an Amazonian genre, as Belém football fans rooted for Cape Verde against Argentina on Friday night. The video captures the moment when fans root for Messi to miss the penalty kick. The Amazonians cheered for the little island nation to the west of Africa that, like Brazil, once was a colony of Portugal. Cape Verde, like Belém in the Amazon, was on the route of Portugal’s Transatlantic slave trade for hundreds of years. Vozinha’s weathered face and sheer determination in the face of giants seemed to embody that history.
