The Amazonians cheered for the little island nation to the west of Africa that, like Brazil, once was a colony of Portugal. Cape Verde, like Belém in the Amazon, was on the route of Portugal’s Transatlantic slave trade for hundreds of years. Vozinha’s weathered face and sheer determination in the face of giants seemed to embody that history.
